The kinetics of the growth of passivating films on the surface of a li
thium electrode, which was exposed to a liquid oxidizing agent, were t
heoretically and experimentally studied. The rate of the process was s
hown to be determined by the surface reaction for short periods of tim
e, and by diffusion transport through the film for long periods of tim
e. The relaxation of the ionic conductance of the films that occured d
uring storage was discovered. A theoretical model which describes this
relaxation was proposed. The parameters of the relaxation processes t
hat are responsible for the drop in the ionic conductance of passivati
ng films were determined from the experimental data obtained with a Li
electrode in a LiAlCl4 thionyl chloride solution.
