Equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV-2) causes Ocular problems in horses, ch
aracterized by epiphora, conjunctivitis, and keratopathy. Ocular probl
ems resulting from infection with EHV-2 have been successfully treated
with ophthalmic medication containing idoxuridine or trifluridine. Co
nfirmation of EHV-2 infection is accomplished by culturing of the viru
s from ocular specimens, and identification of viral isolates by use o
f electron microscopy, restriction endonuclease DNA fingerprinting, an
d Southern blot analysis.
