Pythiosis, caused by the organism Pythium insidiosum, is a granulomato
us disease that typically affects skin and subcutis of horses, cattle,
dogs, and human beings, but it also can affect the intestinal tract o
f dogs and horses. In the United States, pythiosis is most commonly di
agnosed in the Gulf Coast states; however, enteric pythiosis may appar
ently develop in horses that are geographically distant from these sta
tes.
