Dimethyl- and diethylcadmium interact with both free hydroxyl and silo
xane groups of the Aerosil surface to form =Si-O-Cd-C= and =Si-H fragm
ents. At 200-degrees-C these structures undergo beta-elimination to fo
rm surface =Si-O-Cd-H groups. It has been established that on heating
to 600-degrees-C, these groups decompose to afford metallic cadmium wi
th the regeneration of the =Si-OH surface groups.
