1,2,2-Trimethyldisilane-1,1,2-triol (1) is formed as an unstable inter
mediate upon hydrolysis of oligo(trimethyldisilanylsesquiazane). In th
e absence of trapping agents it undergoes rapid condensation to give e
ther-soluble poly(trimethyldisilanyloxane) which contains silanol grou
ps. Treatment of the hydrolysis products with chlorotrimethylsilane in
the presence of triethylamine affords trimethylsiloxy derivatives, (M
e3SiO)2MeSiSiMe2(OSiMe3), 5, 6, and [Si2Me3Ox(OSiMe3)y]n. The isolatio
n of these products indicates that disilanetriol 1 readily undergoes c
ondensation to form hydroxyl-containing six-membered rings and polysil
oxanes. The condensation of compound 1 in the presence of Me3SiOH has
been studied. The ratio between the isomeric cyclosiloxanes 5 and 6 ha
s been determined both by H-1 NMR spectroscopy and by a chemical metho
d (chlorinolysis).
