Anilines undergo oxidative carbonylation in the presence of methanol,
carbon monoxide, oxygen and base. Elemental sulfur or low molecular su
lfur derivatives (CS2, COS) were studied as new and efficient catalyst
s at temperatures 393-423 K and pressure 8-13 MPa. Methyl-N-phenyl car
bamate as product is formed through N,N'-diphenylurea as an intermedia
te. Studies of the methanolysis of this intermediate have shown, that
this reaction step is catalysed by bases and does not need CO, oxygen
or sulfur catalyst.
