Within a period of 10 years (1982 1992), 167 acetylsalicylic acid (ASA
)-intolerant patients were observed in our clinic. 87 (52%) suffered f
rom an underlying disease: 24 (27,6%) suffered from asthma bronchiale
(group I) and 64 (73,6%) from chronic urticaria and/or Quincke's edema
(group II). In group I, 17 (70,8%) of the asthmatic patients develope
d bronchoconstriction from ASA, 13 of them reported about additional s
ymptoms. The other 7 asthmatic patients responded to ASA with extrabro
nchial symptoms. In group II, 57 (89%) of the patients showed skin rea
ctions, 26 of them suffered also from other symptoms. The remaining pa
tients did not develop any dermatologic manifestation, but presented o
ther symptoms. Our results indicate, that intolerance reactions of pat
ients with chronic urticaria and/or Quincke's edema correspond more fr
equently with the underlying disease, than those of the patients with
asthma bronchiale.
