Urban community video surveillance is a tool available to personal sec
urity and protection services. BY installing cameras in sensitive publ
ic places such as airports, railway stations, shopping centres and spo
rts stadiums, the security forces can respond quickly and appropriatel
y when an incident is detected. Another important application is road
traffic control. Video surveillance provides real time information con
cerning the detection or confirmation of a tailback following an accid
ent, enabling traffic to be diverted for the safety of users. The equi
pment mainly consists of cameras, cable transmission and image switchi
ng devices, display and recording equipment and control consoles. Inte
gration of video surveillance into the general security system of an u
rban community is essential. Only a global approach to the design and
implementation of a video surveillance network can guarantee its effec
tiveness.
