Protonation constants of some substituted salicylideneanilines have be
en determined in ethanol-water mixtures at ionic strength of 0.1 M and
at 25 degrees C. A potentiometric method was used and calculation was
done by Martell's and Motekaitis' PKAS computer programme. The trend
in the values of protonation constants of Schiff's bases were explaine
d in terms of the nature of the substituent and the dielectric constan
t of medium. The applicability of the Hammett equation to the effect o
f substituents in Schiff's bases is discussed.
