We propose a novel definition of the running coupling constant in a qu
enched SU(2) lattice gauge theory with twisted boundary conditions sui
table for non-perturbative numerical simulations. It is based on the c
orrelation of Polyakov loops extended in a twisted direction at a dist
ance which is a fixed fraction of the total lattice size. We make the
perturbative calculation which connects this definition to standard re
gularization schemes. We find LAMBDA(twisted Polyakov)/LAMBDA(MSBAR) =
1.6136(2).
