Abstract
Local mode theory for two counterpropagating waves in nonlinear wavegu ides is formulated. This model allows us to describe the transverse ef fects as well as the counterpropagating waves interaction in optical w aveguides. The results are applied to the analysis of the nonlinear Fa bry-Perot waveguide resonator and are compared with the conventional c oupled mode theory solution,
