The univoltine weevil Pachycerus cordiger Germar (= P. scabrosus Brull
e) completes its life cycle on species of Boraginaceae, it is found fr
om westem Europe to the Middle East. In southem France, adult P. cordi
ger were collected feeding on the leaves of Heliotropium europaeum L.,
Echium vulgare L. and Cynoglossum creticum Miller, whereas larvae wer
e found feeding extemally on the roots of the three plant species from
within an earthen cell. Because P. cordiger is considered too much of
a generalist to be released in Australia, work on the weevil as a pot
ential biological control agent of H. europaeum has been stopped.
