Abstract
We investigate discretizations of Stokes' problem (as a sample saddle point problem) from the point of view of stability of increasing order mixed finite element methods. For the cases of velocity-pressure spac e pairs where the stability can be characterized in terms of the growt h of a right-inverse of the divergence operator, we exhibit algebraic instabilities of varying size depending on boundary conditions and the kind of element employed.
