An adaptive component coding system based on the technique of surface
fitting is presented in this paper. The coding process is directly app
lied to each one of the YIQ components, which are transformed from the
RGB components of a color image. In the coding procedure, each compon
ent is regarded as a curved surface in the spatial domain, and the sur
face fitting technique is applied to the description of these surfaces
. To treat the activity regions in an image, a separation filter and a
progressive approximation for the description of each component are a
dopted and developed, respectively. The former makes the image to be m
ore accurately represented by the surface. The latter makes the surfac
e fitting to be adaptively improved under the desired tolerances. The
experiments show that the proposed method has a reasonable performance
measured by the mean square error and the mean absolute error, has lo
w compression ratios (possibly below 0.5 bits/pixel for a color image)
, and will not have the block-effect due to the property of fitting su
rface. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
