The present analysis is concerned with the velocity distribution in st
eady state, hydrodynamically fully developed, laminar flow for Newtoni
an fluids in rectangular ducts. The solutions describing velocity prof
iles and friction factors are derived by using the finite Fourier tran
sform. The solution giving the two-dimensional velocity distribution i
s formally symmetric with respect to the rectangular Cartesian coordin
ates x and y, and provides more accurate numerical results, with short
er computational times, in comparison to the well known velocity distr
ibutions usually quoted in literature.
