Abstract
The effect of a nanostructure on hardness, toughness and crack propaga tion is investigated in the case of SiC-TiC nanocomposites. Toughness values of these nanocomposites are always higher than for classical mo nolithic SiC, and increase with the ratio TiC/(TiC+SiC) as the hardnes s. Moreover, the nanomorphology affects crack propagation because the large number of grain boundaries.
