Since their first emergence during the late eighties, organic field-ef
fect transitors (OFETs) have been the subject of numerous works. In th
e present paper, we review the materials that have been used in OFETs,
and analyse their operating mode. The performance of organic transist
or are compared to that of single crystalline and amorphous silicon tr
ansistors. Particularly, we discuss the charge transport mechanims in
organic solids, and their connection with structural properties. Final
ly, possible future developments of organic transitors are given.
