Abstract
The line spread function is a classical figure of merit for the modula tion transfer function assessment of an optical system. However, this test cannot be directly applied to sampled imaging systems as they oft en exhibit aliasing effects. The purpose of this paper is to define a new figure of merit which allows the characterization of the transfer of all spatial frequencies even those which are placed after the Nyqui st frequency. An experiment has been carried out to demonstrate the ef fectiveness of this new test.
