Abstract
The changes in the valence state of iron and the magnetization of ferr uginous quartzite irradiated by CO2-laser light were studied; the inci dent power density was 10(4) - 10(5) W/cm2. It was established that th e specific saturation magnetization decreased with increasing irradiat ion intensity; it was also found that this decrease is due to the crys tal lattice structure changes that cause a decrease in the fraction of iron ions in ferromagnetic state and an increase in the fraction of i ron ions in the paramagnetic state with their partial reduction.
