Sequencing and computer analysis of a 43,069-bp segment of smallpox (v
ariola) virus genome covering HindIII fragments C, E, R, Q, K, and H w
ere carried out. This region was found to contain 42 open reading fram
es. The encoded polypeptides were compared with relevant vaccinia viru
s proteins. This genomic region was found to be highly conserved among
orthopoxviruses.
