A quantum-well cleaved-coupled-cavity (C3) laser was investigated. A h
igh output power with a line width of less than 70 MHz at half-amplitu
de was achieved. The side modes were suppressed by more than 20 dB. A
laser of this type was found to exhibit 'hard' mode hopping, which cou
ld be reversible or irreversible (in the latter case the initial laser
spectrum was not restored after the modulating current ceased to flow
).
