The engineering design of an ignition scale fusion reactor is underway
with worldwide participation. The project is located at three sites &
carried out by people seconded as Joint Central Team members. Technic
al support is provided by four Home Teams. The superconducting coils f
or the system will require about 1600 tonnes of Nb3Sn strand and will
be the largest ever built. The features of the magnet designs and of t
he R&D program that is underway are described.
