C. Marinucci et G. Vecsey, ELECTROMAGNETIC DESIGN OF THE SLS SUPERCONDUCTING BENDING MAGNET WITHLINEAR GRADIENT, IEEE transactions on magnetics, 30(4), 1994, pp. 1942-1945
The Paul Scherrer Institute is studying a synchrotron radiation source
, the Swiss Light Source, for a variety of applications in physics, ch
emistry, material sciences and industrial production. Specially optimi
zed superconducting bending magnets will provide the hard X-rays neces
sary for structure analysis and micro-fabrication. This preliminary de
sign study investigates a combined function magnet system with dipole
and quadrupole coils, for bending and focusing of the electron beam. T
he electromagnetic characteristics of the magnet, including the end ef
fects, are studied in 2-D and 3-D analyses. The proposed concept is fe
asible to satisfy the requirements of field strength and quality in th
e envelope of specifications, white an optimization of the coil geomet
ry is recommended to improve the longitudinal magnetic characteristics
.
