The magnetic multipole sensitivity to asymmetric and symmetric deviati
ons is analyzed in the two-dimensional cross-section of SSC quadrupole
magnets. Deviations in the 2-D cross-section caused by variations in
the superconducting cable locations due to changes in the thickness of
the pole sheet, mid plane insulation, inter-layer spacer, backing she
et, and copper wedges have direct impact on the magnetic field gradien
t and multipoles in the straight section of the magnets. Asymmetric de
viations due to different coil sizes in a cross-section are also analy
zed. The analyses are performed mainly with the software package AHARM
[1]. SSCMAG[1] and finite element software PE2D[2] were also used to o
btain baselines and to verify the results. The results provide informa
tion essential to an understanding of the deviations of the multipoles
resulting from manufacturing processes, and suggest possibilities for
tuning the multipoles to meet the magnetic requirements.
