F. Negrini et al., 1ST RESULTS OF THE ITALIAN NATIONAL PROGRAM ON SUPERCONDUCTING MHD MAGNETS TECHNOLOGY, IEEE transactions on magnetics, 30(4), 1994, pp. 2086-2089
The paper illustrates the activities developed in the frame of the Pro
getto Finalizzato ''Superconducting and Cryogenic Technologies: superc
onducting magnets for MHD''. The main objectives of the research activ
ities are: the design and the construction of a superconducting protot
ype magnet (2m active length), and the reference design of a supercond
ucting demonstrative magnet (8m active length), both for MHD applicati
ons. The magnets are designed to produce a 5T on axis field with 5% an
d 10% field uniformity in the cross section respectively, and with a f
ield taper less than 0.15 T/m. The design and construction of high fie
ld superconducting magnets based on A15 materials is also developed. T
he study of commercial size MHD superconducting magnets (16 m active l
ength), and the conceptual design of superconducting magnets for disk
MHD generators are also included in the frame of the project.
