An outbreak of bovine rabies occurred on a ranch when cattle were bitt
en by vampire bats. Microscopic lesions showed a nonsuppurative enceph
alitis with intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Immunohistochemistry de
monstrated viral antigen in the brain, and monoclonal antibodies ident
ified a serotype 1 (vampire strain) of the rabies virus.
