Inhomogeneous BaSO4-precipitation patterns are observed in the travell
ing wave generated in the bistable chlorite-thiourea-barium chloride r
eaction system. At the wave-front SO42- is formed and detected as BaSO
4 which precipitates inhomogeneously in the region behind the front. T
hese inhomogeneous patterns can be attributed to the formation of dens
e crystals in the upper solution layer which induce complex three-dime
nsional convective, and reaction-diffusive motions. The wave propagate
s with rapid variations in velocity. The inhomogeneous precipitation p
atterns are annihilated upon a sharp deceleration of the wave.
