The permeation kinetics of several concentrations of both 2,3-butanedi
ol (BD) and dimethyl sulfoxide (D) were investigated at O degrees C in
dog renal cortex using gravimetric methods and the results compared t
o the rate constants obtained earlier with rabbit renal cortex loaded
with D or a mixture of D and acetamide (DA). The half-times for cryopr
otectant flux in dog renal cortex were less than or equal to 3.5 - 4.1
min for BD and 2.7 - 3.3 min for D. The failure of D. to fully permea
te renal tissue observed earlier was not observed for canine renal cor
tex. Analysis of the effect of mannitol on final slice weight in the p
resence of D or BD suggests that these agents may alter the Boyle van'
t Hoff response of the tissue.
