The oxidation kinetics, structure and phase composition have been exam
ined for an oxide film formed on the surface of powder and cast chromi
um specimens during air oxidation at 1160-degrees-C using thermogravim
etric, x-ray phase analysis and scanning microscopy. The oxidation rat
e was studied as a function of the porosity and structural condition.
It has been shown that sintered and extruded powder specimens exhibit
better heat resistance relative to cast chromium.
