Abstract
Comparison of the evolutionary histories of different structures withi n one organism reveals that these evolve in different ways. The evolut ionary process can not be explained by either the model of phyletic gr adualism or the model of punctuated equilibrium. It must be considered as a process of continual reorganisation of structures within the org anism. The evolution of the horse and island mammals are given as exam ples.
