B. Tomlinson et al., SUSTAINED-RELEASE ISRADIPINE COMPARED WITH SPIRAPRIL IN THE TREATMENTOF ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH ISOLATED SYSTOLIC HYPERTENSION, American journal of hypertension, 7(7), 1994, pp. 190000035-190000039
The benefits of treating isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) have bee
n established, but the most appropriate choice of drug is still uncert
ain. For this reason, a sustained-release formulation of isradipine wa
s compared with spirapril in a double-blind randomized study in elderl
y Chinese patients with ISH. The dosage was titrated if necessary afte
r 4 weeks of treatment. The reduction in systolic/diastolic blood pres
sure after 8 weeks was similar for both treatments-20/10 mm Hg with is
radipine versus 24/6 mm Hg with spirapril-measured in the supine posit
ion. There were no orthostatic symptoms and both treatments were well
tolerated.
