E. Dannelid, CHROMOSOME POLYMORPHISM IN SOREX-ALPINUS (MAMMALIA, SORICIDAE) IN THEWESTERN ALPS AND THE SWISS JURA, Zeitschrift fur Saugetierkunde, 59(3), 1994, pp. 161-168
The karyotype (chromosome morphology and G-banding pattern) was examin
ed in 15 individuals of Sorex alpinus, the alpine shrew, collected in
southwest Switzerland and neighbouring France. All three recorded chro
mosome numbers, 2N = 58, 56 and 54, occur within Switzerland. It was f
ound that this difference in chromosome number is due to Robertsonian
polymorphism. Polymorphism in the number of acrocentric versus subtelo
centric chromosomes may also occur.
