Abstract
This paper presents a review of investigations on non-linear stabiliti es of thin shallow elastic shells of revolution, beginning with von Ka rman's original 1910 paper on the subject. Altogether 83 papers were r eviewed. The theoretical foundations and the new methods and new conce pts that were introduced over the years are discussed. Most of the wor k is not well known outside the People's Republic of China.
