Transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) and epidermal growth fact
or (EGF) stimulated autophosphorylation of epidermal growth factor rec
eptor (EGFR) in plasma membrane preparations and A-431 living cells ha
ve been studied. EGF and TGF-alpha concentrations possessing the same
I-125-EGF displacement activity stimulate EGFR autophosphorylation to
different extent. In the case of EGF stimulation, autophosphorylation
of EGFR reached plato at more narrow concentration range than for TGF-
alpha. Both ligands were found to induce dimerization of EGFR in livin
g cells.
