The multielectron dissociative ionization of molecular iodine has been
studied using a laser of wavelength 750 nm, pulse widths (FWHM) of 20
0 fs and 400 fs and focused intensities in the range 10(13)-10(15) W c
m-2. Covariance mapping has been employed to show that the various tra
nsient ions, ranging from I2(2+) to I2(10+) fragment in a predominantl
y charge-symmetrical manner. Results are compared with earlier data ta
ken at a pulse length of 90 fs.
