The calculation of bound and resonance energies and wavefunctions of t
he Schrodinger equation requires the introduction of appropriate bound
ary conditions in the asymptotic region. We determine under which cond
itions these constraints can be spontaneously built up, in a step-by-s
tep inward propagation of the wavefunction by means of the Fox-Goodwin
method. These conditions also apply to the renormalized Numerov metho
d of Johnson. This analysis gives a new insight into the role of compl
ex rotation in resonance calculations.
