In the context of acidobasic disorders in adult cattle, the greatest p
ractical importance should be attributed to acute ruminal acidosis and
metabolic alkalosis in connection with the abomasal reflux syndrome.
Infusion therapy for acute ruminal acidosis is based on application of
1.3-percent NaHCO3 Solution, the maximum infusion flow rate being 0.5
mmol/kg/hr of buffer base. Fifty percent of the estimated daily amoun
t of required buffer base should be applied within six hours. The rema
ining buffer quantity should be infused at lower rate or should be ora
lly administered, depending on the clinical condition of the patient.
The use of potassium-containing buffer solutions has proved to be of a
dvantage. Infusion therapy for metabolic alkalosis is conducted under
practice conditions, using chloride-containing and potassium-containin
g solutions.
