Kj. Crowell et Pm. Macdonald, CHARACTERIZATION OF CATIONIC POLYELECTROLYTE-INDUCED DOMAINS IN MIXEDPOPG-POPC LIPID BILAYERS VIA H-2 NMR, JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY B, 101(7), 1997, pp. 1105-1109
The interactions of a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(vinylbenzyltrimet
hylammonium chloride) (PVTA), with anionic lipid bilayer membranes com
posed of a mixture of phosphatidylglycerol (POPG) plus phosphatidylcho
line (POPC) have been examined using H-2 NMR of choline-deuterated POP
C to probe membrane surface electrostatics. PVTA produces distinct mem
brane domains containing a 1:1 PVTA/POPG cation/anion charge ratio. Th
e remaining PVTA-free domains are depleted with respect to POPG.
