In this highly condensed overview, the author sketches the present sta
te of psychoanalysis in the United States and examines its scientific
status, forms of organisation and training structures. In part one, Ke
rnberg reflects on the debate conducted in 1989 in Psychoanalytic Quar
terly on the future of psychoanalysis. In part two, he presents his ow
n view, looking at psychoanalysis as a branch of learning, its theoret
ical variety, psychoanalytic treatment, training for analysts, psychoa
nalysis as a profession and the international situation. Although Kern
berg concentrates on the American scenario, in many respects his remar
ks also present, mutatis mutandis, an accurate picture of the psychoan
alytic landscape in Europe.
