In this paper the measurement problem in quantum mechanics is discusse
d. It is argued that transcendental experiences of Bohr and Einstein a
re responsible for mystical aura associated with quantum mechanics and
that the Bohr-Einstein debate did not address proper foundational iss
ues. The orthodoxy of van Kampen and Gottfried and the statistical int
erpretation of Ballentine need to be synthesized for a logically consi
stent quantum theory. The need for a new fundamental theory to describ
e elementary individual objects is pointed out, and a possible approac
h is outlined.
