Kl. Madhok et Hs. Goswami, OXIDATION OF O-XYLENE OVER MOLYBDENUM OXIDE MONOLAYER CATALYST, Indian journal of chemistry. Sect. B: organic chemistry, including medical chemistry, 33(8), 1994, pp. 785-786
The heterogeneous catalytic vapour phase oxidation of o-xylene to give
phthalic anhydride, quinone, maleic anhydride and CO2 over MoO3 and M
oO3 applied as monolayers on gamma-Al2O3. CeO2, ZrO2 and TiO2 as catal
ysts is discussed. MoO3 has been found to be the most active catalyst
giving 75% selectivity of phthalic anhydride in 50% total conversion a
t 500-degrees-C, with space velocity 10.4 x 10(3) hr-1 and the surface
area 15.8 m2/g. The overall kinetic analysis indicates that the oxida
tion of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride is first order with a preexpone
ntial factor (A) log 0.61 and an activation energy (E(a)) of 38 kJ mol
-1.
