The user needs of chemical online databases expressed in the literatur
e are reviewed in this article. Accuracy, comparability, completeness,
consistency, and timeliness of the information are high on the at of
desiderata of these users. Data from various sources should also be me
rged more easily. Users showed great concern for the price level and e
specially for the online pricing metrics. Furthermore, properties of c
ompounds, including stereochemistry, three-dimensional structure infor
mation, economic information, toxicity, environmental behavior, etc.,
must be made more searchable. User friendliness of the services is of
high priority.
