A wide-angle low-loss single-mode symmetric Y-junction with a pair of
integrated microprisms is proposed. The microprisms compensate the pha
se mismatch caused by branching to reduce the radiation loss. Device p
erformance is examined numerically by the beam propagation method. The
results show that the transmission loss can be less than 0.81 dB even
if the branching angle is as large as 20-degrees. Moreover, a simple
rule is presented for the design of the prisms.
