The new Swiss radiation protection regulations will require approval o
f the internal dosimetry laboratories. The procedures allow for two ty
pes of bioassay measurements: The 'screening measurements' for the loc
al staff using relatively simple instrumentation to make sure that no
unexpected intake has occurred and the 'incorporation measurements' by
a dosimetry service approved for internal dose assessment. The use of
standard biokinetic models and retention functions is recommended as
long as dose limits are not exceeded and it is assumed that the intake
took place in the middle of the monitoring interval. Nuclide-specific
data sheets give detailed guidance on monitoring methods, intervals,
and dose calculation. Effective dose due to internal and external expo
sure of the radiation workers is recorded by the central dose registry
.
