The photothermal spectroscopic techniques, with special emphasis on th
e thermal lens spectrometry (TLS), are introduced to the non-specialis
t in laser spectroscopy. The following topics are treated on an elemen
tary basis: fundamentals and analytical characteristics, instrumentati
on, selectivity and multi-wavelength capability, the models describing
the signal-concentration relationship, the sensitivity, background no
ise and limits of detection, the influence of light scattering and flo
w. Applications related to the fields of clinical and biochemical anal
ysis and organic pollution are given. The thermal lens circular dichro
ism and the infrared TLS are also briefly outlined.
