TV-video observations of four boreholes in Storglaciaren, Sweden, reve
aled that 1.3% of the observed ice column was composed of englacial vo
ids. The form of the voids is presented by photographs from the video.
It is suggested that they are openings into englacial channels and ca
vities which were intersected during drilling. The observations furthe
r showed that about 11% of the ice column consisted of air-bubble-poor
blue-ice inclusions. The observations show a relation between the blu
e-ice inclusions and the voids, which indicates that the origin and de
velopment of these features are coupled to each other. It is suggested
that crevasses in the accumulation area are an important factor in th
is process.
