Tm. Schartonkersten et A. Sher, ROLE OF NATURAL-KILLER-CELLS IN INNATE RESISTANCE TO PROTOZOAN INFECTIONS, Current opinion in immunology, 9(1), 1997, pp. 44-51
Natural killer cells are now recognized as major effectors of innate r
esistance to protozoan parasites. The principal mechanism by which the
y control the growth of these pathogens is indirect, involving cytokin
e production rather than cytolytic activity. Recent studies have ident
ified a series of positive and negative signals provided by cytokines
and cellular interactions which regulate protozoa-induced natural kill
er cell function.
