The series of articles that follow addresses the design, investigation
, and applications of laser Doppler velocimeters (LDVs) using CO2 lase
rs. The following topics are discussed: physical aspects of the intera
ction of a sensing laser beam with atmospheric aerosols; an analysis o
f the metrological characteristics of an optical heterodyne converter;
problems in the detection and processing of secondary Doppler signals
; the element base of LDVs; aspects of the metrological support of LDV
design and operation. In addition to general problems in the construc
tion and investigation of LDVs, special types of laser Doppler measure
ments are discussed in some of the articles.
