Fa. Vazquezflota et Vm. Loyolavargas, A CATHARANTHUS-ROSEUS SALT-TOLERANT LINE .1. SELECTION AND CHARACTERIZATION, Journal of plant physiology, 144(1), 1994, pp. 116-120
A salt-tolerant line of C. roseus was obtained through continuous subc
ulturing in 171 mM NaCl. Salt tolerance in this culture was characteri
zed by an altered growth behavior, reduced cell volume, and accumulati
on of Na+, Cl- and proline. These features, which have proved to be st
able after the culture was transferred to a salt-free medium, have bee
n commonly ascribed to halophytes. Data suggest that this salt toleran
ce is the result of a shift towards a halophytic behavior.
