Abstract
A 640-kDa proteasome consisting of alpha (25-kDa) and beta (22-kDa) su bunits, and with a temperature optimum of 95 degrees C, was purified f rom crude cell extracts of a hyperthermophilic archaeon, Pyrococcus fu riosus. Although this is the fourth member of the kingdom Euryarchaeot a (and the first hyperthermophile) found to contain a proteasome, none has been identified among the members of the kingdom Crenarchaeota.
